The rice, vegetables, pork and drinking water consumed by residents in the mercury mining areas of Guizhou all showed high levels of total mercury, but only rice was enriched in methylmercury. The average proportions of methylmercury intake from rice consumed by residents in the three villages in the Wanshan mercury mining area accounted for 97.5%, 94.1% and 93.5% of the total intake respectively, and the daily methylmercury intake from rice consumed by different research subjects There is a significant correlation between the amount of methylmercury and the content of methylmercury in their hair, which confirms that eating rice is the main way for residents in Guizhou mercury mining areas to be exposed to methylmercury. The total mercury content in the hair of workers working with indigenous mercury smelting was significantly higher than that of ordinary residents and the control group. The average proportion of methylmercury in their hair to total mercury was only 12.4%, indicating the impact of mercury vapor released by indigenous mercury smelting. The methylmercury content in the hair of residents in Guizhou mercury mining areas has increased to a certain extent compared with the control group. The daily methylmercury intake of some residents eating rice has exceeded the standard set by jecfa in 2003 (0.23 ¦Ìg¡¤d-1¡¤kg- 1), most of which exceed the recommended value of the US Environmental Protection Agency (0.1¦Ìg¡¤d-1¡¤kg-1). In particular, residents in the Tongren Guxi and Laowuchang areas have a certain risk of exposure to methylmercury, and other people in mercury mining areas are also at risk. There is a potential risk of methylmercury exposure through rice consumption.
