Abstract

Iron is an essential trace element for life because it is a cofactor for some important functional enzymes. These functional enzymes have a wide range of functions, from respiration to nucleic acid replication. However, when iron is present in excess of cellular homeostasis, it produces hydroxyl groups that are toxic to the body. Organisms have developed their own regulatory mechanisms, including iron uptake, storage, and export, to control intracellular iron balance. Divalent cation transporter, iron export protein and hephaestin are involved in small intestinal absorption, transferrin and transferrin receptor are involved in iron uptake and transport, ferritin can store iron, and the function of iron regulatory protein is to regulate iron metabolism. This article review focuses on the mechanisms of ferritin-mediated iron transport.
