Abstract

Abstract LEA protein (late embriogenesis abundant prote in, LEA) is a family of proteins related to osmoregulation that is widely present in organisms. The gene encoding this protein is abundantly expressed in the late embryonic development of plant seeds, and it responds to environmental stresses such as drought. LEA gene mRNA will also accumulate in large quantities under conditions such as low temperature, salt stress, ABA, ultraviolet radiation and NaHCO3. The remarkable physical and chemical properties of LEA protein are its high hydrophilicity and thermal stability, and it can remain water-soluble even under boiling conditions. LEA protein can stabilize the cell membrane structure in cells. As a molecular chaperone, it has the functions of binding ions and preventing oxidation. It is considered to be one of the substances that protects plants during stress. In view of these important characteristics, the classification, structure, coding genes and expression regulation methods of LEA proteins and their roles in plant growth are reviewed.
