Luxr Solos Protein Quorum Sensing Bacterial Communication

Abstract

Quorum sensing (QS) mediated by N-acyl-L-homoserine lactones (AHLs) signaling molecules is a common way for Gram-negative bacteria to communicate information. The AHL-QS system includes LuxI-type AHLs synthetase and LuxR-type receptor protein. However, some Gram-negative bacteria lack one or more LuxI-type AHLs synthetases and only have unpaired LuxR-type receptor proteins. This LuxR-type receptor protein is called LuxR solo or Orphan protein. The LuxR solos protein plays an important role in bacterial eavesdropping, inter- and intra-species signal communication, and is a hot topic in the field of quorum sensing research. This article mainly reviews the discovery, basic concepts, protein structure and types of bacterial LuxR solos proteins, explains the important LuxR solos proteins and functions that sense AHLs and non-AHLs signaling molecules, and looks forward to the research prospects and significance of quorum sensing LuxR solos proteins.
