Abstract

Abstract All proteins encoded by the FMDV genome are produced in the form of polyproteins. Leader protein is the first protein with enzymatic activity encoded by the FMDV genome. It is a protease that cleaves the co-translational molecules of polyproteins. FMDV cleaves the leader protein at the N-terminus of the polyprotein. In addition, the leader protein can not only cleave the polyprotein encoded by the virus, but also degrade specific proteins in the host cell, thus greatly improving the virulence of the virus. The leader protein can inhibit the secretion of type I interferon and reduce the ability of the immune surveillance system to monitor FMDV, thereby evading the attack of the host’s non-specific immune system. Regarding the relationship between leader protein and apoptosis, the eIF4G fragments produced by apoptosis are different from the fragments produced by leader protein cleavage of eIF4G.
