Abstract

Honda field trials were conducted for three years at the Hokkaido Kitami Agricultural Experiment Station to determine whether winter wheat grain protein content (GPC) could be predicted before harvest. The test material was Chihokukomugi, a winter wheat variety suitable for processing Japanese noodles. When N is applied in stages, GPC can be accurately predicted based on the color of the second last leaf (the leaf below the flag leaf) at the end of heading. To evaluate the effectiveness of this trial, 95 producing wheat fields in the eastern Hokkaido region were simultaneously surveyed during the 3-year trial period. The results show that in many locations with different environmental conditions, the accuracy of predicting GPC using the second leaf color is low, but the leaf color can be used as an index to judge whether the GPC is low or high relative to processing requirements. When the leaf color value of the first two leaves measured with a chlorophyll meter at the end of heading is less than 40, the GPC may be lower than the processing standard. This index can be used in the eastern Hokkaido area, except for peat soil fields.
